How to Calculate BTU for a Room
The British Thermal Unit (BTU) is the international measure of energy. A higher BTU rating means more cooling power. While a general rule of thumb is 20-25 BTUs per square foot, many other factors affect the actual load:
- Ceiling Height: Rooms with ceilings higher than 8ft gather more heat.
- Insulation: Poor insulation allows heat infiltration, requiring more cooling power.
- Sunlight: Direct sunlight can increase heat load by 10-20%.
- Occupancy: Humans radiate heat (approx 400 BTU/h per person).
- Appliances: Kitchens require significantly more cooling due to ovens and fridges.
